“When I speak English, I sound like a little girl.“
I was so surprised when my client said this to me. At that point, I’d been working with her for a week. She’s a beautiful woman, in her 30’s and had been living in the States for 4 years.
“But you know that you don’t sound like a little girl. You’re at a high-intermediate level.” I wasn’t lying. She spoke English well, much better than she thought she did.
Her big blue eyes filled up with tears and she said, “Maybe, but that’s how I feel. I used to be the manager of my department at a bank in Poland. Now I work as a receptionist and I hate my job. I can’t apply for a higher position in my field here, because I’m afraid of sounding like a little girl at an interview.“
Unfortunately, my client is not alone. I know this too well and lived this experience myself. My parents immigrated to Canada in 1996, and even though they were educated and highly qualified, I watched them both struggle to find work in their fields for years.
